The Approach of Theories of Deviant Behavior on Adolescents" Smoking and Drinking Behaviors Based on General Strain Theory and Social Learning Theory
Hwang Sung-Hyun

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the relative influences of adolescents" smoking and drinking behaviors focusing on variables from Agnew"s general strain theory and Akers" social learning theory. The data are from a self-reported questionnaire survey of a sample of 9,844 elementary, middle, and high school students taken from National Youth Policy Institute in 2010. Logistic and Multiple regression analyses indicate that independent variables from social learning theory have stronger effect on adolescent"s smoking and drinking behaviors than variables from general strain theory. Variables from general strain theory add little explained variance beyond that accounted for by social learning variables. When social learning variables are excluded from the full equation, the change in R2 is dramatic, indicating that it is the social learning factors that have greater impact on dependent variables than general strain factors.
